1
A random variable XX has the distribution Po(145)\mathrm{Po}(145).
1(a) [4]
Use a suitable approximating distribution to calculate P(X⩽150)\mathrm{P}(X \leqslant 150).
1(b) [1]
Justify the use of your approximating distribution in this case.
3 [4]
A student wishes to estimate the proportion, pp, of students at her college who have exactly one brother. She surveys a random sample of 50 students at her college and finds that 18 of them have exactly one brother. She calculates an approximate α%\alpha\% confidence interval for pp and finds that the lower limit of the confidence interval is 0.2440.244 correct to 3 significant figures. Find α\alpha correct to the nearest integer.
4
A random variable XX has the distribution N(10,12)\mathrm{N}(10, 12). Two independent values of XX, denoted by X1X_{1} and X2X_{2}, are chosen at random.
4(a) [1]
Write down the value of P(X1>X2)\mathrm{P}(X_{1} > X_{2}).
4(b) [5]
Find P(X1>2X2−3)\mathrm{P}(X_{1} > 2X_{2} - 3).
5
The number of goals scored by a sports team in the first half of any match has the distribution X∼Po(3.1)X \sim \mathrm{Po}(3.1). The number of goals scored by the same team in the second half of any match has the distribution Y∼Po(2.4)Y \sim \mathrm{Po}(2.4). You may assume that the distributions of XX and YY are independent.
5(a) [2]
Find P(X<4)\mathrm{P}(X < 4).
5(b) [3]
Find the probability that, in a randomly chosen match, the team scores at least 5 goals.
5(c) [4]
Given that the team scores a total of 5 goals in a randomly chosen match, find the probability that they score exactly 3 goals in the first half.
