1 [3]
A particle of mass 1.61.6 kg is dropped from a height of 99 m above horizontal ground. The speed of the particle at the instant before hitting the ground is 1212 m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. Find the work done against air resistance.
2
Two particles AA and BB, of masses 3.23.2 kg and 2.42.4 kg respectively, lie on a smooth horizontal table. AA moves towards BB with a speed of vv m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} and collides with BB, which is moving towards AA with a speed of 66 m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. In the collision the two particles come to rest.
2(a) [2]
Find the value of vv.
2(b) [2]
Find the loss of kinetic energy of the system due to the collision.

An athlete of mass 8484 kg is running along a straight road.
4(a) [1]
Initially the road is horizontal and he runs at a constant speed of 33 m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}. The athlete produces a constant power of 6060 W. Find the resistive force which acts on the athlete.
4(b) [6]
The athlete then runs up a 150150 m section of the road which is inclined at 0.8∘0.8^\circ to the horizontal. The speed of the athlete at the start of this section of road is 33 m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} and he now produces a constant driving force of 2424 N. The total resistive force which acts on the athlete along this section of road has constant magnitude 1313 N. Use an energy method to find the speed of the athlete at the end of the 150150 m section of road.

A particle PP starts at rest and moves in a straight line from a point OO. At time tt s after leaving OO, the velocity of PP, vv m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1}, is given by v=bt+ct32v = bt + ct^{\frac{3}{2}}, where bb and cc are constants. PP has velocity 88 m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} when t=4t = 4 and has velocity 13.513.5 m s−1\text{m}\,\text{s}^{-1} when t=9t = 9.
6(a) [1]
Show that b=3b = 3 and c=−0.5c = -0.5.
6(b) [2]
Find the acceleration of PP when t=1t = 1.
6(c) [5]
Find the positive value of tt when PP is at instantaneous rest and find the distance of PP from OO at this instant.
6(d) [3]
Find the speed of PP at the instant it returns to OO.
