1
Small smooth spheres AA and BB, of equal radii and of masses 55 kg and 33 kg respectively, lie on a smooth horizontal plane. Initially BB is at rest and AA is moving towards BB with speed 8.58.5 m s−1\text{m s}^{-1}. The spheres collide and after the collision AA continues to move in the same direction but with a quarter of the speed of BB.
1(a) [3]
Find the speed of BB after the collision.
1(b) [2]
Find the loss of kinetic energy of the system due to the collision.
3
Two particles AA and BB, of masses 2.42.4 kg and 1.21.2 kg respectively, are connected by a light inextensible string which passes over a fixed smooth pulley. AA is held at a distance of 2.12.1 m above a horizontal plane and BB is 1.51.5 m above the plane. The particles hang vertically and are released from rest. In the subsequent motion AA reaches the plane and does not rebound and BB does not reach the pulley.
3(a) [4]
Show that the tension in the string before AA reaches the plane is 1616 N and find the magnitude of the acceleration of the particles before AA reaches the plane.
3(b) [3]
Find the greatest height of BB above the plane.
4
A particle AA, moving along a straight horizontal track with constant speed 88 m s−1\text{m s}^{-1}, passes a fixed point OO. Four seconds later, another particle BB passes OO, moving along a parallel track in the same direction as AA. Particle BB has speed 2020 m s−1\text{m s}^{-1} when it passes OO and has a constant deceleration of 22 m s−2\text{m s}^{-2}. BB comes to rest when it returns to OO.
4(a) [3]
Find expressions, in terms of tt, for the displacement from OO of each particle tt seconds after BB passes OO.
4(b) [3]
Find the values of tt when the particles are the same distance from OO.
4(c) [3]
On the given axes, sketch the displacement-time graphs for both particles, for values of tt from 00 to 2020.

A car of mass 900900 kg is moving up a hill inclined at sin⁡−10.12\sin^{-1} 0.12 to the horizontal. The initial speed of the car is 1111 m s−1\text{m s}^{-1}. After 1212 s, the car has travelled 150150 m up the hill and has speed 1616 m s−1\text{m s}^{-1}. The engine of the car is working at a constant rate of 2424 kW.
6(a) [5]
Find the work done against the resistive forces during the 1212 s. The car then travels along a straight horizontal road. There is a resistance to the motion of the car of (1520+4v)(1520 + 4v) N when the speed of the car is vv m s−1\text{m s}^{-1}. The car travels at a constant speed with the engine working at a constant rate of 3232 kW.
6(b) [3]
Find this speed.
7
A particle PP moves in a straight line. The velocity vv m s−1\text{m s}^{-1} at time tt seconds is given by v=0.5tv = 0.5t for 0⩽t⩽100 \leqslant t \leqslant 10, v=0.25t2−8t+60v = 0.25t^{2} - 8t + 60 for 10⩽t⩽2010 \leqslant t \leqslant 20.
7(a) [3]
Show that there is an instantaneous change in the acceleration of the particle at t=10t = 10.
7(b) [6]
Find the total distance covered by PP in the interval 0⩽t⩽200 \leqslant t \leqslant 20.
